Russian Presidential Security Advisor Shoigu Visits North Korea on Putin’s ‘Special Instructions’

Russian Presidential Security Adviser Sergei Shoigu has arrived in North Korea on the “special instructions” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Russian news agency TASS reported on Tuesday that Shoigu is likely to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his visit.

TASS said Shoigu will hold talks with North Korea’s top leadership during the trip. The talks will focus on the implementation of decisions made during his visit to Pyongyang earlier this month under the “comprehensive strategic partnership” agreement last year. However, TASS did not provide any specific details about Shoigu’s current visit or Putin’s “special instructions.”

Diplomatic and security ties between North Korea and Russia have grown dramatically closer in the past two years. This is Shoigu’s third visit to North Korea in the past three months. Pyongyang’s military support for Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine has brought Moscow closer to North Korea.

A Reuters investigation has found that North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of munitions and thousands of troops for use in the war in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-un has expressed “unconditional support” for Russia’s current policies. South Korean and Western officials fear that North Korea could receive advanced military technology and economic assistance from Russia in return.
